Sloping the arm rather than running it level builds a closed triangle between back and front leg; leaning on the arm, that triangle passes the load to two ends instead of one joint. The same slope follows the natural fall of the arm from elbow to wrist, so the forearm is supported along its length rather than resting on a straight bar. The result is a profile that takes less room than models with level arms.
