Closing the sides with vertical slats instead of a solid panel keeps an armchair-shaped chair from looking heavy: the volume stays, but light passes between the slats and the chair does not stand like a wall. Running the slats vertically also draws the eye upward and makes the seat read taller than it is. Setting the leather pads inside the timber frame limits the surface that wears — a service trolley knocking the edge meets the frame, not the leather.
